Acadia Center envisions a clean energy, low carbon economy focused on using advances in clean technology—not fossil fuels—to heat buildings, power cars, and generate power.
Areas Of Focus
Acadia Center is pursuing reforms in four key areas that will work simultaneously to drive a profound and much-needed transformation in the energy sector.
At its core, Acadia Center is a regional organization – one that develops deep local relationships in the states where we work, while maintaining an overarching regional perspective.
At a time when the federal government has abdicated action on climate, the power of regions, states and communities to lead is more important than ever.
We believe that we are most effective when we work at both a state and regional level. In our state work we are embedded in local advocacy and politics, and many of our state leads have lived and worked their whole careers in the state they represent.
Projects
Acadia Center participates in multi-state efforts such as the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), the Transportation Climate Initiative (TCI), and RESPECT (Reforming Energy System Planning for Equity and Climate Transformation) to transition our region into the clean energy future.

Envisioning an improved regional transportation system that connects everyone, including those in underserved urban, suburban, and rural areas - with clean, reliable and accessible mass transit.
Acadia Center’s RESPECT proposal outlines key reforms to utility planning processes to ensure that utility investments and decision-making are aligned with state goals to address climate pollution, further environmental justice, and lower consumer costs. RESPECT focuses on achieving change at the scale and speed of the climate crisis by putting public policy decisions squarely on the shoulders of state decision-makers and re-focusing the role of the utility on what it does best—operating a reliable power and heat system and serving customers.
