Acadia Center Demonstrates Climate Risks in Utility Transaction
Acadia Center introduced ample evidence and cross-examined executives to find the sale of Rhode Island utilities from National Grid to PPL would likely hinder the state’s abilities to reduce greenhouse gases as required by the state’s Act on Climate. Specifically, PPL lacks National Grid’s experience operating under similar climate laws in other states (like Massachusetts and New York), delivering nation-leading energy efficiency programs (National Grid has 3 programs ranked in the top 5 nationally), implementing projects to decarbonize natural gas distribution systems (National Grid advancing geothermal and hydrogen blending pilots), and addressing hazardous gas leaks.
