Grid Action Report – June Heat Wave

Acadia Center’s Grid Action Report examines the impacts of the recent historic heat wave on the New England power grid, which was pushed to its limits with record-setting demand. The analysis shines a light on the important role that several clean energy resources played in keeping the lights on (and the A/C running) and keeping things affordable for consumers by relieving extremely high prices during peak periods. The rapid analysis focuses on the contributions from local, behind-the-meter (BTM) solar energy, which helped serve a major portion of load during the hot afternoon, shaved the peak in the evening, and pushed the net peak later in the evening as temperatures began to cool. The piece also highlights critical contributions played by energy efficiency and interregional transmission imports, along with strong evidence about the opportunity for battery energy storage to further help the system during challenging peak periods.
